Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, reported to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) headquarters on October 1 after an Accra High Court issued an arrest warrant. The MP has been formally charged with money laundering and causing financial loss to the state. The investigation centers on alleged unauthorized transactions involving SIC Life Savings and Loans, specifically a disputed GHc2.2 million (~$187,926 USD) payment to his former law firm. His legal team, led by Samuel Atta Akyea, has challenged the overnight detention, claiming the transactions were legitimate legal services.
This case tests the limits of parliamentary immunity in Ghana and signals that the new administration's investigative bodies are willing to pursue high-profile opposition figures, raising concerns of political persecution among the NPP minority.
President John Mahama has ordered an "ironclad" overhaul of port security after French authorities in Dunkirk seized 3.9 tonnes of cocaine arriving from Ghana. In Parliament, Minority Ranking Member Samuel Jinapor demanded a bipartisan inquiry, arguing that the government cannot investigate a breach that occurred under its own watch. Speaker Alban Bagbin, however, dismissed the motion for a probe, citing potential prejudice to ongoing judicial proceedings.
Ghana is currently ranked as the fifth-largest country of origin for cocaine seized in Antwerp, Belgium. The Minority has called for the suspension of maritime and visa-waiver agreements with Colombia due to the escalating risk of Ghana becoming a primary transit hub.
Over 7,121 delegates from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are converging at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium to elect new national officers. The high-stakes contest for National Chairperson features Paul Afoko, John Boadu, and Boakye Agyarko. Security has been tightened in Kumasi, with the police announcing road closures to manage the massive influx of party faithful.
The outcome will determine the leadership team tasked with reconciling the party and preparing for the 2028 elections. Watch for the performance of Paul Afoko, who is being positioned as a "clean break" candidate to unify disgruntled members.
The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) generated $1.871 billion USD from artisanal and small-scale mining in September, exceeding its target of $1.4 billion USD by $471 million. Under a new framework starting in October, GoldBod will take full responsibility for foreign exchange intermediation, selling directly to commercial banks to support market liquidity while allocating a substantial portion to the Bank of Ghana for national reserves.
This massive inflow provides a significant buffer for the cedi. The transition to a centralized Spot FX Sales framework suggests tighter regulatory control over gold-derived revenues, which could reduce market volatility.
At the current rate of GHc11.71 per USD (see market_context), these strong gold inflows are a positive indicator for overall economic stability, potentially slowing the inflation that impacts the cost of supporting family back home.
Societe Generale has signed an agreement to exit the Ghanaian market, selling its 60.22% controlling stake. Morocco's Attijariwafa Bank will acquire 55.22%, becoming the new majority owner, while SSNIT will increase its stake to 24.36%. The move marks a significant shift as a major Pan-African institution takes over SG's 40-branch network.
This reflects a broader trend of European banks divesting from Africa. For Ghana, SSNIT's increased stake is intended to safeguard pensioner assets while keeping a significant portion of the bank's ownership in local hands.
The International Court of Arbitration has dismissed Tullow Ghana Limited’s challenge against a $393.09 million USD tax assessment. The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) had assessed the firm on insurance proceeds and branch profits. While the core tax was upheld, the tribunal ruled that certain penalties were not applicable under existing Petroleum Agreements.
A devastating fire at the Duraplast PVC warehouse in Avenor, Accra, claimed the lives of two people, including a two-week-old infant. Firefighters were delayed by haphazardly placed wooden kiosks that obstructed access. In a separate incident, a domestic fire in Akweteyman gutted an apartment but was contained before spreading to adjacent homes.
These incidents highlight the ongoing risks of poor urban planning and the proliferation of informal structures in industrial zones, which continue to hinder emergency response efforts.
The Ghana Police Service has finalized the rollout of TraffiTech-GH, an automated system using cameras and sensors to monitor speeding and traffic light violations. Electronic Notices of Violation (ENV) will be sent directly to motorists' mobile phones via SMS. Emergency and security vehicles will be exempt from speeding tickets during active duties.
Road fatalities reached 2,949 deaths in 2025. This digital shift aims to reduce human bias in enforcement and curb the rising death toll on Ghanaian roads.
Head coach Carlos Queiroz and the GFA have mutually terminated his contract following a 4-2 collapse against The Gambia, leaving Ghana bottom of their AFCON qualifying group. Queiroz achieved only a 14.3% win rate during his tenure. Parliament's Sports Committee has summoned the GFA to explain the team's decline.
Black Stars context: Ghana risks missing a second consecutive AFCON tournament. Pressure is mounting on GFA President Kurt Okraku to resign as the hunt for a new manager begins before the crucial clash with Somalia.
President Mahama has removed National Sports Authority (NSA) Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah following allegations of an unauthorized visa scheme for the 2026 World Cup. The scheme reportedly collected over $623,000 USD (GHc7.3 million) from individuals seeking travel assistance. Associate Professor Emmanuel Osei Sarpong has been named Acting Director-General.
The National Theatre has held a "Celebrating Our Own" ceremony to honor legendary playwright James Ebo Whyte for his lifelong contributions to Ghanaian drama and dance. The event emphasized the need for corporate Ghana to view the arts as a viable economic engine rather than just a CSR target.
Uncle Ebo Whyte remains a pillar of Ghanaian cultural exports; his recognition signals a push to professionalize the sector ahead of Rex Omar’s planned "Black Star Comedy Experience" export in 2027.
Today we covered the high-stakes arrest of MP Baffour Awuah, the record-breaking gold inflows that are stabilizing our economy, and the leadership shakeup in Ghanaian sports following the Black Stars' qualifying crisis. Thank you for reading the Anansi News Daily Brief!
