Jorge Jesus Asserts Coaching Authority Over Cristiano Ronaldo Amid Portugal Squad Crisis

Erik ten Hag accuses Cristiano Ronaldo of lacking commitment

Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has offered a candid assessment of his relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo, stating that the five-time Ballon d'Or winner lacked the commitment required during his second tenure at the club. Ten Hag revealed that while the Portuguese forward was initially a central part of his tactical plans, their professional bond dissolved due to concerns over Ronaldo's dedication to the team's collective standards. These comments provide new insight into the friction that ultimately led to Ronaldo’s acrimonious departure from the Premier League club in November 2022. Ten Hag explained that at the beginning of his appointment in 2022, he and Ronaldo shared a positive working relationship. The manager had intended to integrate the veteran striker into his high-pressing system, recognizing his significant goal-scoring pedigree. However, the Dutch coach noted that as the requirements of the new tactical regime became clear, a lack of professional commitment from Ronaldo began to hinder the squad's progress. This perceived lack of focus on team objectives eventually made it difficult for Ten Hag to justify Ronaldo's continued inclusion as a regular starter. The deterioration of their relationship was marked by several high-profile incidents, including Ronaldo's refusal to enter the pitch as a late substitute during a Premier League fixture against Tottenham Hotspur. These tensions reached a breaking point following Ronaldo’s televised criticisms of the club’s leadership and Ten Hag himself in an interview with Piers Morgan. Ten Hag’s recent reflections clarify that the decision to sideline and eventually release the star was rooted in a fundamental disagreement over the level of sacrifice needed to restore the club's competitiveness. Since those events, Ronaldo has transitioned to a new chapter in Saudi Arabia with Al-Nassr, where he has continued to set goal-scoring records. Meanwhile, Ten Hag’s tenure at Manchester United has also concluded, with the club moving in a different direction under new management. These remarks by the former manager serve as a final perspective on one of the most debated managerial decisions in recent football history, emphasizing Ten Hag's preference for collective discipline over individual stardom.
