Dennis Miracles Aboagye, the Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and a prominent aide to the party's flagbearer, has been released from the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). His release follows three days of detention and the fulfillment of a GH¢50 million bail condition, which included three sureties. Aboagye was arrested at Kotoka International Airport upon his return to Ghana, a move that triggered intense political debate and accusations of harassment from the opposition. The investigation centers on alleged financial and procurement irregularities totaling approximately GH¢55 million during his tenure as the Executive Secretary of the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee on Decentralisation (IMCCoD) between 2022 and 2025.
The arrest, described by NPP leadership as a "Rambo-style" operation, was prompted by a petition from the current Executive Secretary of the IMCCoD requesting a forensic audit. EOCO has indicated that the probe involves multiple individuals, including the former IMCCoD accountant, Gerald Appiah, who is also being investigated for conspiracy to steal and money laundering. While Appiah reportedly began refunding some of the disputed funds, Aboagye's legal team, led by Samuel Atta Akyea, has maintained that their client is innocent and has been subjected to "cruel and oppressive" conditions. Atta Akyea criticized the EOCO for detaining Aboagye for over 48 hours without formal interrogation, arguing that a simple invitation for questioning would have sufficed as Aboagye posed no flight risk.
The case has caused a significant rift in Parliament and the broader political landscape. Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin and Suame MP John Darko have both condemned the bail terms as punitive, with Darko accusing investigative bodies of acting as though they are superior to the courts. In response, James Enu, Vice Chairman of Parliament’s Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee, defended the high bail amount, asserting it is commensurate with the GH¢55 million alleged to have been misappropriated and is necessary to ensure the suspect's appearance in court. Meanwhile, members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), including MP Mohammed Adams Sukparu, have urged the NPP to allow state institutions to carry out their duties without political interference.
Following his release, EOCO officials escorted Aboagye to his residence in Larteh Akuapem as part of the ongoing inquiry. The NPP has signaled that it will not forget what it terms a "witch-hunt" against its members, with General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua labeling the EOCO’s handling of the matter a disgrace to democracy. As investigations continue, the Minority in Parliament has demanded that the Attorney General provide a formal briefing on the circumstances of the arrest. The outcome of this high-profile case is expected to have lasting implications for public accountability and the independence of investigative bodies in Ghana.
