President John Mahama has ordered the immediate dissolution of the National Sports Authority (NSA) governing board, chaired by Dr. Fred Awaah, effective September 2, 2026. While Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah remains in charge of day-to-day operations, the move is part of a broader administrative restructuring aimed at addressing mounting concerns over sports infrastructure decay, such as the weed-infested Axim Sports Complex.
The dissolution signals the new Mahama administration's frustration with the management of national assets. For the sports sector, the challenge will be maintaining momentum for grassroots initiatives like the Constituency Games during the leadership transition.
President John Mahama, who was inaugurated on January 7, 2025, has been systematically reviewing the performance of state institutions. The NSA has faced criticism recently over high maintenance costs and the poor state of regional stadiums.
Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) Engineers have cleared 170 kilometers of the 176-kilometer corridor for the proposed Accra-Kumasi Expressway. Only six kilometers remain in a project seen as vital for national connectivity. The clearing establishes the official right-of-way, allowing the government to move toward the procurement and construction phase of the high-speed route.
This expressway is the most anticipated infrastructure project in the country, designed to bypass the chronic congestion and safety hazards of the existing N6 highway.
The completion of this corridor clearing reduces the risk of 'right-of-way' litigation and land compensation delays, making the project more attractive for potential Public-Private Partnership (PPP) construction bids.
The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) has launched its 2026 Awareness Month, revealing that 47% of cybersecurity incidents reported this year are linked to online fraud. Between 2024 and 2025, fraud cases surged by 48%, putting approximately GHc101 million (~$8.93 million USD) at risk. The CSA is now collaborating with the Ghana Association of Banks to implement AI-driven security measures and enhance customer data protection.
As Ghana's digital finance ecosystem grows, the sophistication of 'cyber-enabled' fraud threatens public trust in mobile money and digital banking, which are the backbones of the modern economy.
Be extra vigilant with digital transfers and social engineering scams. Fraudsters are increasingly using AI to mimic relatives' voices or create sophisticated fake investment schemes targeting Ghanaians abroad.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres has warned of a record-breaking "super" El Niño event that is destabilizing global weather patterns. The phenomenon is expected to bring severe droughts to Southeast Asia and parts of Africa, while causing catastrophic flooding in others.
For Ghana, El Niño typically correlates with erratic rainfall patterns in the middle belt, which can significantly impact cocoa production and food prices. Cocoa is currently trading at $6,282.00/MT (per market context).
Monitor the Ministry of Food and Agriculture’s mitigation strategies. A severe El Niño could drive up domestic inflation through food supply shocks and impact the trade balance if cocoa yields falter.
The Paramount Chief of Atebubu, Ohempon Dr. Yeboah Asiamah, has donated GHc70,000 (~$6,190 USD) to secure temporary office space for a new Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) office. He also provided a dedicated parcel of land for a permanent facility, eliminating the need for residents to travel to distant regional hubs for licensing.
This partnership between traditional authorities and the state accelerates decentralization and improves public safety by encouraging vehicle registration in previously underserved areas.
A head-on collision between a Toyota Hiace and a Ford Transit on a hilly section of the Accra-Aflao Highway near Sege resulted in 13 deaths and 18 injuries on September 2. Emergency responders from the Ghana National Fire Service had to extricate trapped survivors from the wreckage.
Calls for engineering interventions on the 'Sege-Ada' stretch. This corridor is a critical international transit route, and its safety record has become a point of national outcry.
In a joint operation between police and the military, 32-year-old Isaka Sabani (alias "Culture") was killed during an encounter in the Binduri District. Authorities retrieved an AK-47 and 28 rounds of ammunition. Sabani was a primary suspect in multiple shooting incidents recorded in late August.
Binduri sits near the Bawku zone, a region troubled by a decades-long chieftaincy and ethnic dispute between the Kusasi and Mamprusi groups. Security operations here are highly sensitive and aimed at preventing the spillover of ethnic violence.
Carlos Queiroz has reversed his decision to resign, confirming he will lead Ghana through the 2027 AFCON qualifying cycle. Despite criticism from fans regarding his defensive style, GFA President Kurt Okraku defended the 73-year-old Portuguese coach, noting that more "expansive" styles have failed to end Ghana's 40-year trophy drought.
Black Stars context: Queiroz must now decide the future of captain Jordan Ayew and brother André Ayew, both of whom are currently free agents after the European transfer window closed without them securing new clubs.
Ghanaian champions Ampem Darkoa Ladies will play Nigeria's Edo Queens in the WAFU Zone B final on Saturday. The winner earns the region's sole ticket to the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League.
The seventh edition of PRURide takes place September 6 on the Borteyman Highway. Winners in the male and female elite categories will each receive GHc15,000 (~$1,326 USD).
MTN Ghana hosted a workshop for media professionals and civil society organizations on the ethical use of AI tools like ChatGPT. The training focused on using AI for research while maintaining human oversight to prevent the spread of AI-generated misinformation.
As AI becomes more accessible, the risk of sophisticated 'deepfake' content and automated bias entering the national discourse is high. Equipping journalists as 'truth gatekeepers' is essential for democratic stability.
Today we covered the surge in cyber fraud targeting Ghanaian bank accounts, the tactical decision to retain Carlos Queiroz for the Black Stars, and the significant progress on the Accra-Kumasi Expressway. Thank you for reading the Anansi News Daily Brief!
