
The Central Regional Police Command has apprehended six individuals in connection with a violent mob attack in New Winneba that left three people dead and approximately 15 others injured. The incident, which reportedly stems from a long-standing land litigation dispute, occurred on the morning of Tuesday, September 1, 2026. The clash caused widespread panic as a large group of armed individuals stormed the community, resulting in significant property damage and a breakdown of public order before security forces could intervene.
According to reports from the scene, approximately 300 individuals from neighboring towns, armed with machetes, clubs, and other weapons, descended on New Winneba around 10:40 a.m. The ensuing violence resulted in three fatalities and left over a dozen others with varying degrees of injury. Among the wounded was a police officer who was injured while attempting to manage the escalating situation. The victims are currently receiving medical attention at the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba, where several remain in critical condition.
Following the restoration of order by mid-afternoon, the police identified and arrested six suspects: Kweku Kakraba (52), Arko Thomas (19), Samuel Tulasi (19), Samuel Gyasi (22), Emmanuel Okyere (22), and Seth Osei (22). During a sweep of the area, authorities recovered a single-barrel gun and an empty cartridge. The suspects are currently being held at the Cape Coast Divisional Police Headquarters, where they are assisting with ongoing investigations into the orchestrators of the mob action.
While the situation in New Winneba is now reported to be under control, a heavy security presence remains in the area. The police have established checkpoints and increased patrols to prevent any reprisal attacks and ensure the safety of the residents. Authorities are urging the public to remain calm and provide any information that could assist in the investigation, emphasizing that the law will take its course against those who use violence to settle land disputes.
