Sunyani Technical University opens new electric vehicle research centre

Sunyani Technical University (STU) has established the Centre of Excellence in New Energy Vehicles and Green Technologies (STU-CENEVGT), a pioneering facility dedicated to advancing Ghana’s electric mobility ecosystem. Launched in 2024, the centre represents a strategic move to integrate sustainable transport solutions into the country's national infrastructure. Led by Engr. Dr. Samuel Jonas Yeboah, the initiative aims to position the university at the forefront of green technology research and practical engineering innovation within the West African sub-region.

The centre is currently investigating several high-impact projects designed to address specific local transport needs. Key research areas include the conversion of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles to electric power and the development of solar-powered utility tricycles. These efforts are focused on creating cleaner, more affordable transportation options that can be manufactured or maintained using local engineering expertise, thereby reducing Ghana's dependence on imported fossil fuel technologies and mitigating environmental impact.

Collaboration serves as a cornerstone of the centre’s strategy, with the university partnering with international experts such as Dr. James Adu Ansere of Canada. By fostering ties between academia and industry, STU-CENEVGT intends to provide students with hands-on practical training that meets modern industrial standards. This focus on building a specialized workforce is intended to ensure that Ghana possesses the necessary technical skills to support a burgeoning green economy and maintain a sustainable transport network for the future.
