Wa Islamic Senior High School Fire Displaces 138 Students; Management Sends Girls Home After Dormitory Disaster

The management of Wa Islamic Senior High School in the Upper West Region has been forced to send 138 female students home temporarily after a devastating fire destroyed their dormitory and personal belongings. The incident occurred on the evening of August 2, 2026, while students were attending classes, leaving them with nothing but the clothes they were wearing. Six dormitory rooms were completely gutted by the blaze, causing significant property damage and leaving the affected students in a state of deep emotional distress. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported as the dormitory was unoccupied at the time the fire started.

According to the Headmaster, Mr. Alhassan A. Bafaara, the decision to send the students home was a necessary interim measure to manage the immediate lack of accommodation and to allow the girls time to recover from the trauma of the event. While some students have been relocated to makeshift spaces in classrooms, many were advised to return to their families ahead of upcoming examinations while the school works with local authorities to find a more permanent solution. Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) arrived at the scene within approximately 30 to 35 minutes and managed to contain the fire before it could spread to other blocks, though the damage to the affected wing was already extensive.

Preliminary investigations by the GNFS and school authorities point toward potential electrical faults as the cause of the outbreak, with additional inquiries looking into the possible misuse of electrical appliances by students. This disaster has raised serious concerns regarding school safety, as this is reportedly not the first time Wa Islamic Senior High School has faced such an incident. In response, school management highlighted previous efforts to enhance electrical safety, which unfortunately proved insufficient to prevent this latest outbreak. The Wa Municipal Assembly is currently conducting a formal assessment of the damage to assist in the planning and reconstruction of the dormitory facilities.

In the wake of the disaster, the Ghana National Fire Service has emphasized the urgent need for educational institutions across the country to strengthen their fire safety protocols and conduct regular audits of their electrical systems. For the students of Wa Islamic SHS, the immediate priority remains the restoration of normalcy and the provision of replacement materials so that academic activities can resume without further disruption. Local authorities and the school administration have pledged to work tirelessly to ensure that the displaced girls can return to campus as soon as safe and adequate housing is secured.
