Telecel Ghana has officially launched its biodegradable Eco-SIM, a significant technological shift aimed at reducing the environmental footprint of the country's telecommunications industry. The new SIM card is manufactured with 90% less plastic than traditional alternatives, providing a sustainable option for Ghana's growing base of mobile users without compromising on connectivity or performance. This move comes as part of Telecel's broader commitment to environmental sustainability and corporate responsibility in an increasingly digital economy.
The initiative addresses a massive global waste problem, with industry data indicating that approximately 3.7 billion physical SIM cards were produced worldwide in 2024 alone. In Ghana, the scale of potential impact is substantial; the country recorded over 43 million active mobile SIM users as of February 2026. By transitioning to a low-plastic, biodegradable format, Telecel aims to divert significant amounts of non-recyclable plastic from landfills and the natural environment, addressing the urgent need for sustainable alternatives in the tech hardware space.
Aneth Muga, Telecel Ghana’s Director of Consumer Business, emphasized that the Eco-SIM empowers customers to take direct action in reducing plastic waste and contributing to climate action. She noted that the company believes technology and sustainability can coexist to create a positive social impact. This launch is a key pillar of Telecel's environmental agenda, which also includes transitioning network hubs to solar power and planting over 40,000 trees to support reforestation efforts across the country.
As the telecommunications sector continues to evolve, Telecel’s introduction of the Eco-SIM sets a new standard for green technology in Ghana. By integrating sustainability into everyday consumer products, the company is aligning its operations with global climate goals and circular economy principles. This transition encourages other industry players to rethink the environmental cost of traditional hardware as the nation moves toward a more eco-conscious and sustainable digital future.
