Deputy Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Mohammed Adam Sukparu, has officially launched the National Community Media Cyber Capacity Building Project (NCMCCBP). This initiative is designed to strengthen Ghana's digital defenses by empowering community media practitioners with the tools and knowledge to educate the public on cyber hygiene and online safety. Speaking at the launch on August 3, 2026, the Deputy Minister emphasized that a secure digital environment requires a united front between government institutions, security agencies, and the media to protect citizens from the growing threat of cybercrime.
The project specifically targets community media as a vital bridge to underserved populations, who are often most vulnerable to evolving digital threats. Sukparu highlighted pressing challenges such as the rise in mobile money fraud and the spread of misinformation, urging journalists to treat cybersecurity reporting as a critical public service. By equipping local broadcasters and reporters with technical expertise, the government aims to ensure that accurate information about cyber threats reaches every corner of the country, fostering a more informed and resilient citizenry across all regions.
Supporting this vision, Divine Selase Agbeti, Director-General of the Cyber Security Authority (CSA), pointed out that the increasing sophistication of cybercrime necessitates an active and informed partnership with the media. He noted that technology alone cannot provide a total solution; rather, public awareness and behavioral change serve as the first line of defense. The CSA's involvement underscores the national priority placed on protecting Ghana's digital ecosystem from malicious actors who exploit gaps in public knowledge and technical security.
International collaboration remains a cornerstone of this effort, with the Czech Ambassador to Ghana, Pavel Bílek, pledging his country's continued support through training programs and strategic partnerships. The Ambassador emphasized that effective cybersecurity transcends national borders, requiring both high levels of specialized expertise and broad public awareness. As the NCMCCBP rolls out, it is expected to create a robust network of media professionals capable of safeguarding Ghana's digital future, ensuring that the nation's technological progress is supported by a strong defensive framework.
