The Deputy Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Mohammed Adams Sukparu, has launched the National Community Media Cyber Capacity Building Project, asserting that an informed public remains Ghana's most potent defense against digital crime. Speaking at the launch event in Accra on August 3, 2026, Sukparu emphasized that while robust legislation and advanced technologies are essential components of national security, the vigilance of everyday citizens serves as the primary line of defense against increasingly sophisticated cyber fraud and identity theft. This initiative marks a strategic shift toward grassroots education to ensure that the benefits of Ghana’s digital expansion are not undermined by malicious actors.
The project specifically targets community journalists, equipping them with the specialized skills needed to educate local populations on cyber hygiene and online safety. By leveraging the reach of community media, the government aims to tackle prevalent issues such as mobile money (MoMo) fraud, misinformation, and digital extremism that often target underserved or less tech-savvy populations. Director-General of the Cyber Security Authority (CSA), Divine Selase Agbeti, noted that accurate and proactive journalism is a critical tool for national security, as it can prevent digital incidents before they escalate into financial or social crises.
This capacity-building initiative is a collaborative effort involving the Cyber Security Authority, the Africa Centre for Digital Transformation, and the Embassy of the Czech Republic. It integrates into the broader digital transformation agenda of President John Mahama’s administration, which includes flagship programs like the One Million Coders Programme and the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy. By fostering a Cyber Security Press Corps, the government seeks to establish a permanent bridge between law enforcement, technical experts, and the public, ensuring that information regarding new digital threats is disseminated rapidly and accurately.
As Ghana continues to integrate digital solutions into its economic fabric, officials stress that the sustainability of this progress depends on collective responsibility. The National Community Media Cyber Capacity Building Project is expected to create a more resilient digital ecosystem by fostering a culture of cybersecurity awareness from the district level upward. Through continued collaboration between the media and security agencies, the government aims to empower all Ghanaians with the knowledge necessary to navigate the digital world safely, thereby securing the nation's digital future.
