Rev Stephen Wengam, the General Superintendent of Assemblies of God, Ghana, is leading a historic week-long apostolic and missions visit to The Gambia. Accompanied by a high-powered delegation of church officials, the visit marks a significant milestone in the relationship between the Ghanaian church and its Gambian counterpart. Upon their arrival in Banjul, the delegation was warmly received by Rev Paul Ampofo Williams, the National Head of The Gambia Assemblies of God Mission, who expressed high expectations for the impact of this high-level engagement.
This mission is particularly noteworthy as it represents the first time the complete Executive Presbytery—the church's top leadership body—has visited the Gambian mission since its inception. The delegation includes key officers such as Rev Godwin Tito Agyei and Rev Ernest Birikorang. The week-long itinerary is packed with strategic activities, including visits to various local church branches, speaking engagements at a National Pastors and Leaders Conference, and the ordination and credentialing of new pastors. Additionally, the leadership will participate in the dedication of a new temple and hold strategic meetings with both local church and national leaders.
The relationship between the two branches dates back nearly three decades, when the Assemblies of God, Ghana first established its missionary outreach in The Gambia. This visit serves to reinforce those long-standing ties and provide spiritual and administrative support to the local mission. Rev Ampofo Williams highlighted that the visit is expected to significantly enhance mission work in the country, providing a renewed sense of purpose and direction for the Gambian clergy and congregants.
As the mission unfolds, the focus remains on strengthening the religious and social impact of the Assemblies of God in West Africa. By providing direct leadership and resource support, the Ghanaian delegation aims to ensure the continued growth and sustainability of the Gambian mission. This landmark visit underscores the commitment of the Assemblies of God, Ghana to its regional missionary goals and sets a precedent for future collaboration and oversight within its international branches.
