The Police Intelligence Directorate has successfully apprehended seven individuals involved in a sophisticated fraudulent electronic traffic violation scheme. Operating from Ada and Winneba, the suspects allegedly utilized a custom-built online application to target unsuspecting motorists by sending deceptive violation notices. The arrests mark a significant breakthrough in the Ghana Police Service's ongoing efforts to curb cyber-enabled crimes that exploit digital government systems and public trust. The individuals in custody have been identified as Martha Quarshie, Peter Ofori McCarthy, Robert Akplehe, Christian Akplehe, Alfred Kofi Totimeh, Michael Edem Amemornu, and Prosper Otumfour. According to police investigations, the syndicate's operation involved sending out fake alerts that prompted victims to pay fines via a specific digital link. Prosper Otumfour is particularly noted for his role in the financial logistics of the scam; he reportedly registered multiple Telecel cash SIM cards using the names of friends and family members to facilitate the collection and subsequent distribution of the illicit funds among the group members. During the coordinated police operations in Ada and Winneba, authorities recovered a total of GHS 10,978 in cash, which is believed to be proceeds from the fraudulent activities. In addition to the cash, several electronic devices used in orchestrating the scam and various identification documents were seized. These items are expected to serve as critical evidence as the suspects undergo further investigation and face prosecution. This incident highlights the growing trend of digital fraud targeting public services in Ghana. The police have issued a strong advisory to the general public, urging motorists to remain vigilant against unsolicited messages claiming traffic violations. Citizens are encouraged to verify any such notices through official channels and report suspicious electronic communications to the nearest police station or through designated emergency lines to help dismantle such criminal networks.
