The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has officially announced the appointment and formally welcomed the new Asantehemaa, Nana Yaa Akyaa II, in a magnificent ceremony at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi. The new Queen Mother, born Margaret Serebour and formerly known as Nana Ama Bonsu, ascends the Kusiamoah Stool as the 15th Asantehemaa in the storied history of the Asante Kingdom. This significant appointment follows a period of transition within the kingdom, marking a new chapter for traditional leadership and the preservation of Asante customs.
Nana Yaa Akyaa II is a direct descendant of the late Otumfuo Agyeman Prempeh I, ensuring a deep historical and royal continuity for the position. During the grand welcoming ceremony, the Asantehene performed a symbolic walk of approximately 100 metres to receive the new Queen Mother, a rare gesture that underscored the profound importance of her new role. The event was characterized by vibrant celebrations as hundreds of women, dressed in traditional attire, honored the new leader with traditional songs, dancing, and heartfelt blessings within the palace grounds.
The new Asantehemaa succeeds the late Nana Konadu Yiadom III, who served the kingdom with distinction. As the 15th occupant of the Kusiamoah Stool, Nana Yaa Akyaa II is expected to provide essential spiritual and social leadership alongside the Asantehene. Following the festivities at Manhyia Palace, the formal process of her enstoolment will continue with an official introduction to the Asanteman Traditional Council scheduled for later this week, completing the traditional protocols required for her to fully assume her royal duties.
