Education Ministry and GES Condemn Mob Attack on Obuasi SHTS Headmaster Over Ritual Rumors

The Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service (GES) have launched a full-scale investigation into a violent assault on Mr. Abdulai Zakaria, the Headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS). On August 5, a mob of students physically attacked Mr. Zakaria and vandalized his private property, including his vehicle, leaving him with multiple injuries. The headmaster was subsequently rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for treatment. The Ministry has condemned the actions as criminal and unacceptable, with Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu directing the GES to ensure that rigorous disciplinary measures are taken against those responsible.

The unrest reportedly stemmed from unfounded allegations of ritualistic activities after students claimed to have discovered a buried baby on the school premises. This discovery triggered a violent reaction among the student body, necessitating immediate police intervention to restore order. Six students have since been arrested and are currently assisting the police with investigations to identify other participants in the riot. GES Public Relations Head, Daniel Fenyi, emphasized that violence has no place in educational institutions and urged students to use constructive communication channels to resolve grievances rather than resorting to lawlessness.

Reacting to the incident, Deputy Minister for Education Dr. Clement Abas Apaak highlighted a worrying trend of indiscipline fueled by social media influence and substance abuse. He noted that many students are increasingly exposed to inappropriate online content via mobile phones, leading them to mimic unacceptable behaviors without considering the consequences. Dr. Apaak also raised concerns about the rising use of narcotics and harmful substances among the youth, specifically warning against certain energy drinks that may contain dangerous ingredients which contribute to volatile behavior in schools.

Moving forward, the Ministry of Education has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a safe and disciplined learning environment across Ghana. Minister Haruna Iddrisu stressed that the government will not tolerate acts of vandalism or physical assault against educators. As the investigation continues, authorities are calling on parents and community leaders to play a more active role in monitoring student behavior and promoting values of respect and discipline to prevent a recurrence of such unfortunate events in the nation's schools.
