Obuasi Senior High Technical School Closed Indefinitely Following Violent Student Assault on Headmaster

The Obuasi Senior High Technical School (O'Sec Tech) in the Ashanti Region has been shut down indefinitely following a violent student riot that left the headmaster, Abdulai Zakaria, critically injured. The disturbance, which erupted on August 5, resulted in the arrest of six students after they allegedly launched a coordinated attack on the headmaster and school property. Mr. Zakaria sustained severe injuries, including a reported head fracture and wounds allegedly inflicted with cutlasses. He was initially rushed to the AngloGold Ashanti Hospital before being transferred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi for specialized emergency care. The Obuasi Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) ordered the immediate suspension of all academic activities to restore order and prevent further escalations.

The unrest was reportedly triggered by sensational allegations involving the headmaster and claims of ritualistic activities. According to multiple reports, students accused Mr. Zakaria of burying a newborn baby or fetus on the school grounds near a refuse dump. These rumors gained momentum after students claimed to have spotted the headmaster's vehicle in the area where the body was allegedly discovered. While some accounts suggested the incident might be related to a cover-up of a student's abortion, the situation quickly spiraled into a violent confrontation. Students vandalized three bungalows, damaged several vehicles, and physically assaulted the headmaster at his residence, with videos of the chaotic scene appearing on social media platforms like TikTok.

The Ministry of Education has condemned the attack in the strongest terms, labeling the behavior of the students as "reprehensible and criminal." Deputy Minister of Education Dr. Clement Apaak linked the rising trend of student indiscipline to the negative influences of social media, mobile phone abuse, and narcotic use. Dr. Apaak urged parents to take a more active role in monitoring their children's behavior, emphasizing that moral development must accompany academic achievement. The Ministry has directed the Ghana Education Service (GES) to conduct a thorough investigation into the root causes of the violence and the validity of the students' claims, promising that all perpetrators will face appropriate legal and disciplinary sanctions.

As the investigation continues, a heavy police presence remains on the school campus to safeguard remaining infrastructure. The incident has raised significant concerns regarding the safety of educational administrators and the speed at which unverified rumors can lead to large-scale violence in schools. Moving forward, the Ministry of Education and MUSEC are expected to deliberate on the security requirements and disciplinary reforms necessary before the institution can safely reopen.
