Nigerian Woman Sentenced to 15 Months for Child Abuse in Ghana

Beauty Alakwe, a 34-year-old Nigerian woman, has been sentenced to 15 months in prison for inflicting harm on her nine-year-old daughter in Duase, Ghana. The incident, which occurred on November 22, 2023, came to light after a local resident lodged a complaint, prompting an investigation by the police. Following her conviction, Alakwe was also fined GH¢6,000; however, her failure to pay the fine resulted in her imprisonment at the Central Prisons in Kumasi. In addition to her sentence, the court has directed the Department of Social Welfare to assist in the welfare of both the victim and Alakwe's son, with the possibility of reunification with their family in Nigeria. The police have praised the community for their support during the investigation and reiterated the importance of protecting children from harm.
