Plans are underway to establish the Museum of Healing and Reconciliation (MHR) in Navrongo, Upper East Region of Ghana, aimed at documenting the histories of slavery, colonial violence, and community resistance in Northern Ghana and Southern Burkina Faso. Unlike existing coastal heritage sites, the MHR will focus on the inland communities significantly impacted by the transatlantic slave trade, offering a narrative that has often been overlooked.
Initiated by Emmanuel Agangzesum Awine, the museum seeks to promote historical justice, healing, and community dialogue through research and education. It has garnered strong support from local leaders and academics who recognize its potential to reshape historical narratives and foster connections with the African diaspora. The MHR is expected to serve as a significant educational facility, enhancing heritage tourism and local development.
A public forum is scheduled for March 2026 to engage stakeholders and discuss the museum's significance in education and community memory, highlighting its role in recognizing the histories of affected communities and promoting their cultural heritage.
