The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) Special Task Force has successfully intervened in a violent confrontation between suspected illegal miners within the Atiwa Forest Reserve in the Eastern Region. The clash, which left one individual with serious injuries, threatened to spiral out of control before the task force arrived on the scene. According to reports from the Eastern Region, the timely arrival of the NAIMOS operatives was critical in restoring order and preventing potential fatalities during the heated dispute over mining territories. The injured party was treated as the task force secured the immediate vicinity to prevent a resurgence of the violence. Following the containment of the confrontation, the task force conducted a comprehensive reconnaissance patrol throughout the affected areas of the forest reserve to assess the scale of the illegal operations. This operation revealed a disturbing level of environmental degradation and extensive illegal mining infrastructure hidden deep within the protected zone. In a direct move to disable the unauthorized operations, the NAIMOS team destroyed 15 makeshift structures that served as housing and storage for the miners. Additionally, the task force decommissioned 11 industrial water-pumping machines used to wash gold ore, a practice that has caused significant pollution to local water bodies and disrupted the forest's ecosystem. The incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by authorities in protecting Ghana's vital forest reserves from the scourge of illegal mining. NAIMOS officials have indicated that further investigations into the violent clash are underway to identify the ringleaders and the extent of the criminal network operating in the Atiwa Forest. The Secretariat has pledged to intensify its patrol operations and maintain a heightened presence in the area to deter future incursions. These actions are part of a broader strategy to ensure the long-term preservation of the country’s natural resources and to uphold environmental protection laws against those who exploit protected lands.
