MTN Ghana has unveiled a major $1.1 billion infrastructure investment plan aimed at significantly expanding its network coverage and improving service quality across the country. A core component of this strategy involves the construction of 80 new network sites across the five regions of northern Ghana, a move that coincides with the telecommunication giant’s 30th anniversary in the Ghanaian market. This announcement comes on the heels of robust financial performance, with the company reporting a 32.3% revenue surge to 15 billion cedis and a 46.8% increase in profit after tax to 5.1 billion cedis during the first half of 2026. Senior Manager Emmanuel Kwei Afutu detailed that out of the $1.1 billion total investment, approximately $380 million has been specifically allocated for network expansion in 2026 alone. The company aims to add a total of 500 new sites nationwide by the end of that year. The 80 sites designated for the northern sector will be strategically distributed to bridge the digital divide: 38 in the Northern Region, 17 in the Savannah Region, 14 in the Upper East Region, 11 in the North East Region, and one in the Upper West Region. This targeted rollout is designed to cater to the growing demand for digital services and improve connectivity for rural and underserved communities. Beyond infrastructure, the expansion is expected to have a profound socio-economic impact by facilitating market access for farmers, enabling online learning for students, and enhancing public safety through reliable communication channels. Mr. Afutu emphasized that the initiative aims to connect individuals to diverse opportunities, addressing persistent challenges such as digital literacy and affordability. To complement the technical rollout, MTN is also investing in human capital through the MTN Skills Academy and various local community projects. These efforts are further supported by the MTN Ghana Foundation, which continues to drive corporate social responsibility through health and sanitation initiatives, including hygiene projects in schools. As the company navigates the evolving telecommunications landscape under the current administration of President John Mahama, the emphasis remains on collaboration with governmental and community partners. By integrating infrastructure development with skills training, MTN Ghana seeks to ensure that the benefits of the digital economy are accessible to all citizens, regardless of their geographic location.
