MPs and Foundations Launch Nationwide Support Schemes for Over 7,000 SHS Freshers Following 2026 BECE

Across Ghana, Members of Parliament (MPs), philanthropic foundations, and traditional leaders have launched extensive educational support initiatives to assist thousands of students transitioning into Senior High Schools (SHS). Following the release of the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results, these interventions are primarily aimed at alleviating the financial burden on parents and ensuring that brilliant but needy students are not hindered by the costs of essential school supplies. From the Western Region to the North, these programs have collectively reached over 7,000 students, providing critical items such as mattresses, metal trunks, wooden chop boxes, and stationery.

In the North Tongu constituency, MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa spearheaded one of the largest efforts, distributing essential supplies and 100 bicycles to over 2,200 newly admitted students to facilitate their travel and boarding needs. Similarly, in Jomoro, MP and Deputy Minister of Transport Dorcas Afo-Toffey marked the sixth year of her scholarship initiative by supporting 1,000 freshers with comprehensive school kits. Other significant contributions were seen in Atwima Nwabiagya North, where MP Frank Yeboah distributed GHS 400,000 worth of supplies and launched ‘Agenda 10-10-10’ to provide full scholarships for students pursuing medicine and engineering. In Atwima Nwabiagya South, MP Shirley Tiwaa Kyei also committed GHS 400,000 to provide 300 students with necessary items, emphasizing that educational support must go beyond merely paying tuition fees.

Beyond material donations, several constituencies reported significant academic improvements and introduced merit-based rewards to foster excellence. In the Bekwai constituency, MP Ralph Poku-Adusei celebrated a remarkable rise in public school performance, with top aggregates improving from 18 to 6. Under his School Starter-Pack Scholarship (SSPS), outstanding students received laptops and bedding, while a dedicated scholarship was established for students with disabilities. In Kumawu, MP Ernest Yaw Anim provided cash rewards of GH’500 to the top-performing student from each of the 50 schools in his district, alongside providing school items to 500 boarding students. In Nanumba North, the Togmah Foundation specifically targeted 19 high-achieving candidates, pledging full sponsorship for female students entering science-related fields.

Community leaders and education directors have lauded these initiatives as vital to the success of the national education agenda. In Agortime Ziope, Paramount Chief Nene Nuer Keteku IV and MP Charles Akwasi Agbeve urged parents to increase their involvement in their children's studies, noting that local support systems are critical for long-term academic success. Many MPs, including Theophilus Vondee of Twifo Atti-Morkwa, also used these distribution ceremonies to advise students against negative peer influences, urging them to maintain focus on their studies to justify the investments made by their communities. As these thousands of students begin their secondary education, local education directorates have pledged to monitor their academic progress to ensure the resources provided yield tangible developmental outcomes for their respective districts.
