President Mahama Showcases Ghana’s Free Primary Healthcare and MahamaCare at 81st UN General Assembly

President John Dramani Mahama has presented Ghana’s transformative health agenda to the global community, highlighting the launch of the nation’s historic three-tier healthcare programme. Addressing the 81st United Nations General Assembly on September 24, 2026, President Mahama detailed his administration’s commitment to providing essential primary healthcare services at no cost to every Ghanaian. This initiative, which forms a cornerstone of the government’s broader social protection agenda, has already gained significant recognition from the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the United Nations as a viable model for achieving Universal Health Coverage and meeting the Sustainable Development Goals.

The centrepiece of this reform is a three-tiered system designed to decentralize access to medical services, ensuring that all citizens can receive basic care at the community level without financial barriers. Beyond primary services, the President showcased the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as "MahamaCare." This specialized fund is structured to alleviate the financial burden on citizens living with serious non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including cancer and diabetes. By providing subsidized treatment options for these chronic conditions, MahamaCare aims to ensure that life-threatening illnesses do not lead to financial ruin for affected families, reinforcing the government's focus on social equity.

During his address, President Mahama positioned these healthcare advancements as essential dividends of Ghana’s robust constitutional democracy. He argued that the success of a democratic nation should not be measured solely by the conduct of elections every four years, but by its ability to deliver tangible improvements in the quality of life, such as healthcare, education, and economic opportunities. By prioritizing universal access to essential services, Mahama asserted that Ghana continues to serve as a beacon of peaceful governance and democratic progress in Africa, demonstrating how political stability can translate into direct social benefits for the populace.
