Four people sustained various degrees of injury following a severe head-on collision between an Intercity STC coach and a Kia Picanto taxi at Konongo Akrantiebesa on the night of June 4, 2026. The accident, which occurred on the main highway, necessitated a high-stakes rescue operation by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) after one passenger was found trapped within the mangled wreckage of the taxi. Despite the intensity of the impact and the significant damage to both vehicles, officials have confirmed that there were no fatalities reported at the scene.
In the immediate aftermath of the crash, local bystanders and residents acted as first responders, successfully rescuing three of the injured victims. These individuals were quickly transported to Steward Hospital for medical attention. However, the fourth victim remained pinned inside the crushed Kia Picanto, requiring professional intervention. A rescue team from the Konongo-Odumasi Fire Station arrived shortly after and utilized specialized hydraulic extrication equipment to cut through the vehicle’s frame. The trapped passenger was successfully freed and rushed to the Asante Akyem Central Hospital for advanced medical care.
The collision led to temporary traffic congestion along the Konongo-Kumasi highway as emergency crews worked to clear hazardous debris and manage the scene. The GNFS and local police coordinated efforts to ensure the safety of other road users while the mangled vehicles were being moved. Both the STC bus and the taxi have since been impounded by the police to assist in their ongoing inquiries into the incident, which left both vehicles with extensive front-end damage.
Investigations by the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) are currently underway to determine the exact cause of the head-on collision. While the specific sequence of events remains under review, authorities are inspecting the crash site to ascertain if factors such as excessive speed or improper overtaking played a role. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the safety challenges on the Konongo stretch of the highway, prompting renewed calls from officials for motorists to exercise heightened vigilance and strictly adhere to road safety regulations.
