Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has formalised a partnership with MTN Ghana to bridge the gap between academic training and industry requirements. The two institutions signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) focused on developing artificial intelligence (AI) talent and enhancing industry-academia collaboration. This initiative aims to equip students with practical skills while addressing specific technological challenges currently facing the country.
Under the terms of the agreement, KNUST students will benefit from structured internships and the opportunity to work on real-world AI projects within MTN’s operational environment. To further incentivise academic excellence, MTN Ghana will award scholarships to the university's top Computer Science graduates. A significant component of the scholarship programme will focus on supporting women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), ensuring a more inclusive approach to technological development.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, MTN’s Kwame Adu Manu highlighted the importance of aligning university curricula with the evolving demands of the telecommunications and technology sectors. He noted that by providing students with hands-on experience, the partnership aims to combat brain drain by demonstrating that high-level technical careers are viable within Ghana. KNUST Vice-Chancellor Professor Christian Agyare reaffirmed the university's commitment to building strong industry relationships, stating that such collaborations are essential for producing graduates who are ready to contribute to the national economy immediately.
This collaboration marks a proactive step in building a local talent pipeline for the burgeoning AI field in West Africa. By integrating academic rigour with industry practicals, the partnership is expected to create a model for other sectors to follow in reducing the skills gap and fostering indigenous innovation. The MoU sets the stage for a long-term relationship that could transform how technological education is delivered and applied in Ghana.
