The College of Engineering at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has announced plans to construct a US$3.5 million (GH₵40 million) Technology and Innovation Building. Launched as the "Legacy Project" to commemorate the college's 75th anniversary, the four-storey facility is designed to serve as a central hub for bridging the gap between academic research and industrial application. The project aims to provide a dedicated space for students and researchers to prototype and test new designs alongside industry experts.
Provost of the College, Professor Kwabena Biritwum Nyarko, emphasized that the hub will foster an environment where innovative partnerships can address real-world challenges. By moving beyond theoretical instruction, the college intends to ensure that academic outputs are translated into practical solutions that benefit the Ghanaian economy. This facility is expected to allow students to refine their designs through hands-on experimentation, preparing them more effectively for the demands of the modern job market.
Vice-Chancellor of KNUST, Professor Christian Agyare, noted that the project is integral to the university's broader corporate strategic plan. He highlighted the university's responsibility to ensure its research initiatives result in tangible societal benefits. During the launch of the anniversary celebrations, guest speakers and alumni also stressed the importance of maintaining high standards of integrity and discipline within the engineering profession, urging for increased investment in student-led start-ups and research development.
As the college celebrates its 75-year milestone, it is actively seeking support from industry leaders and alumni to bring the "Legacy Project" to fruition. The facility is positioned as a key component in the university's mission to produce industry-ready graduates capable of driving national development. By providing the tools and professional networks necessary to adapt to a rapidly evolving global market, the innovation hub aims to secure KNUST's position at the forefront of engineering education in Africa.
