Kenya’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport Paralyzed as Thousands Stranded by Worker Strike

A major strike by airport workers at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi has grounded thousands of travelers and caused significant disruptions to regional and international aviation. The industrial action, which began after negotiations for better pay and improved working conditions reached a deadlock, has left thousands of passengers stranded at Kenya’s primary aviation hub. The strike has led to a near-total halt of operations, affecting both arrivals and departures at one of Africa's busiest transit points.
The operational paralysis prompted Kenya Airways to issue urgent travel advisories, urging all passengers to verify their flight statuses before proceeding to the airport to avoid burgeoning crowds. Reports from the ground indicate a chaotic scene at the terminals, with families stuck inside and international tourists, such as Canadian traveler Trent Bryski, left waiting outside the airport gates. Passengers have expressed growing frustration over a lack of real-time information, as flight boards remained frozen and ground staff were unavailable to provide updates on delayed or canceled services.
The root of the unrest stems from a breakdown in labor negotiations between workers' unions and the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA). Having previously issued a strike notice, the employees are protesting what they characterize as substandard labor conditions and a lack of progress on wage increases following months of stalled discussions. In response to the walkout, the KAA announced the implementation of contingency measures intended to minimize the scale of the disruption. However, the effectiveness of these measures remains limited given the scale of the walkout.
As a critical hub for East African commerce and tourism, the shutdown at JKIA has immediate ripple effects across the continent's aviation network. The Kenya Airports Authority maintains that it remains open to dialogue with the union representatives to resolve the impasse and restore normalcy to airport operations as quickly as possible. For now, travelers are advised to maintain close contact with their respective airlines for the latest updates on the evolving situation, as the standoff between the government and labor unions continues to impact the regional transport sector.
