The Jetse Developmental Foundation, established by Jetse Abram Kabu Akuaku III, has launched a comprehensive assessment of the persistent flooding plaguing the Ada Foah Market. This move comes in response to mounting public concerns after recent heavy rains severely disrupted trading activities and caused significant damage to vendors' goods and nearby residences. The foundation’s intervention aims to identify the root causes of these drainage failures and implement sustainable infrastructural solutions to protect the economic heartbeat of the Ada Traditional Area.
During the field assessment, foundation members and local officials observed that the primary drivers of the flooding were silted and blocked drains, alongside generally inadequate drainage infrastructure. Moses Jumpah, a District Director, highlighted that the accumulation of silt has significantly reduced the capacity of existing channels to handle runoff. Nene Terkpertey Dada Tetteygah V, the Chief of Ada Foah, emphasized the urgency of moving beyond temporary fixes to practical, long-term engineering solutions that will prevent water from overflowing into the marketplace and surrounding communities.
To address these challenges, the foundation is fostering a collaborative approach involving the Ada East District Assembly and various traditional stakeholders. Nomo Jonathan Dorkutso, Secretary to the Paramount Chief, reaffirmed the foundation's commitment to working with state institutions to ensure that rehabilitation efforts are both effective and enduring. The assessment team recommended immediate desilting of existing drains as a necessary short-term measure, while advocating for a broader redesign of the local drainage network to accommodate future rainfall patterns and urban growth.
Looking ahead, the foundation intends to leverage the upcoming 89th Asafotufiami Festival as a platform to mobilize community support and showcase development initiatives. By emphasizing collective responsibility and community involvement, the Jetse Developmental Foundation seeks to create a model for socio-economic advancement in the region. The successful resolution of the Ada Foah Market flooding is viewed as a critical first step in a larger mission to enhance the infrastructure and quality of life for the residents of the Ada Traditional Area.
