Henry Ampong, the Executive Director of Corporate and Investment Banking at Ecobank Ghana, has called for a paradigm shift in how digital innovation is perceived, arguing that technology should focus on transforming lives rather than merely modernizing banking operations. Speaking at the Ecobank–JoyNews Business Financial Dialogue, Ampong emphasized that the true value of technological advancement lies in its ability to expand economic opportunities for individuals and underserved communities across the continent. He noted that while digital tools have revolutionized the financial sector, their ultimate goal must be the promotion of broad-based financial inclusion.
Ecobank, which operates across 35 African countries, has positioned itself at the forefront of this digital transformation by prioritizing accessibility and convenience. Ampong highlighted several key innovations implemented by the bank to bridge the gap for unbanked populations, including the ability to open accounts directly via mobile phones, the introduction of cardless withdrawal systems, and the deployment of virtual cards. These initiatives are designed to bring essential financial services to the fingertips of millions, enabling them to participate more fully in the formal economy regardless of their geographic location.
Despite the significant strides made in digital banking, Ampong acknowledged that substantial barriers remain that prevent the full realization of technology's potential. He specifically pointed to the high cost of digital services and a prevailing lack of digital literacy as major hurdles that still exclude a significant portion of the population. Addressing these issues, he argued, is not a task for financial institutions alone but requires a concerted and collaborative effort among government agencies, technology providers, and educators to ensure that no one is left behind in the digital age.
Looking forward, the dialogue underscored the necessity of viewing technology as a social equalizer rather than just a corporate tool. By focusing on affordability and education, stakeholders can ensure that the digital revolution translates into tangible improvements in the quality of life for Ghanaians and Africans at large. Ampong concluded by reaffirming Ecobank’s commitment to refining its digital strategies to better serve the evolving needs of its diverse clientele while continuing to champion the cause of inclusive economic growth.
