Ghana National Fire Service Battles Multiple Blazes in Weija, Kasoa, and Kumasi

Firefighters from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) were stretched thin on July 23 as they battled three major fire outbreaks across the Greater Accra, Central, and Ashanti regions. The incidents, which occurred in Weija, Kasoa, and Kumasi, resulted in significant property damage and at least one hospitalization. While the causes of these fires remain under investigation, the occurrences have prompted renewed calls from fire officials for increased public vigilance and the strict adherence to fire safety protocols to prevent such devastating losses.\n\nIn the Greater Accra and Central regions, crews from the Weija Fire Station managed two separate incidents within a single day. The first broke out at approximately 5:38 am at a residence in Sampa Valley, Weija. Firefighters arrived promptly to contain the domestic blaze, successfully preventing it from spreading to adjacent rooms, although one bedroom was completely destroyed. Later that evening, at 8:53 pm, a more intense commercial fire erupted at the China Market in Kasoa. Despite the fire engulfing several metal containers, a collaborative effort involving reinforcements from Anyaa and Swedru saved the market's main building. One person was reportedly injured during the Kasoa blaze and was rushed to the hospital for treatment.\n\nSimultaneously, in the Ashanti Region, the Adoma Fashion training centre in Kumasi was devastated by a fire that started around 7:00 am. The training hub, which serves approximately 30 apprentices, saw thousands of cedis worth of sewing machines and materials destroyed. Adom May, the centre’s secretary, recounted that the flames appeared suddenly while she was packing clothes; despite desperate attempts by those present to extinguish the fire, it quickly became uncontrollable. Firefighters from the KNUST and Asokore Mampong stations arrived shortly after the alarm was raised and managed to bring the situation under control within an hour, shielding neighboring shops and homes from the destruction.\n\nThe Ghana National Fire Service has launched formal investigations into the root causes of all three incidents. As the nation adjusts to the current administration's focus on infrastructure and safety under President John Mahama, the GNFS has reiterated the importance of prompt reporting of fire outbreaks. Officials emphasize that early detection and immediate notification are critical to minimizing damage and saving lives. Property owners are further encouraged to equip their premises with functional fire extinguishers and ensure electrical systems are regularly inspected by certified professionals.
