The Ghana Tourism Authority Ex-staff Association (GHATEX) has officially launched the Road Travel Safety and Tourism Project in Accra, a strategic initiative designed to enhance public education on road safety and reduce traffic accidents. This five-year project aims to make Ghana’s diverse tourist destinations more accessible and safer for both domestic and international travelers. By addressing the critical intersection of transportation safety and hospitality, the initiative seeks to foster a more secure environment for the country's growing tourism sector.
Central to the project is a comprehensive campaign to influence driver behavior and promote responsible practices on the road. The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) and other state institutions are collaborating with GHATEX to emphasize the importance of regular vehicle maintenance and the elimination of reckless driving. During the launch ceremony, NRSA Director-General Abraham Amaliba highlighted that improving road safety is a collective responsibility, stressing that public education is the most effective tool for preventing the loss of lives and property due to avoidable crashes.
From a tourism perspective, the initiative is seen as a vital boost for local industry growth. Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) CEO Maame Afua Houadjeto noted that safe road infrastructure and responsible travel habits are essential for encouraging tourists to explore sites beyond the major cities. The project aligns with the government's broader priorities of enhancing national infrastructure and reducing the public health burden caused by road-traffic-related injuries, which remains a significant concern for the national healthcare system.
Over the next five years, the partnership will implement a series of nationwide sensitization programs targeting transport unions, tour operators, and the general public. These efforts are expected to create a lasting culture of safety that extends beyond peak travel seasons. By integrating road safety into the national tourism strategy, stakeholders are working toward a future where travel across Ghana is characterized by security and efficiency, ultimately supporting the nation’s ambition to become a premier travel destination in Africa.
