The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has announced the implementation of new water and electricity tariffs, effective January 1, 2026. Under the new structure, electricity rates will see an increase of 9.86%, while water tariffs will rise by 15.92% across all consumer categories. This adjustment is part of a comprehensive five-year review period spanning from 2026 to 2030, aimed at addressing the evolving economic landscape in Ghana.
The decision to adjust tariffs comes after extensive consultations with stakeholders and is designed to reflect significant changes in macroeconomic indicators as well as the electricity generation mix in the country, which is expected to be dominated by thermal power. In addition to the new rates, the PURC has indicated that tariffs will be subject to quarterly reviews to better accommodate fluctuating economic conditions. Notably, the new provisions also include measures to ensure electricity supply to island communities, enhancing accessibility for all Ghanaians.
