Ghana TVET Service and Tema Oil Refinery Partner to Bolster Industrial Skills Ahead of National TVET Week 2026

The Ghana TVET Service has forged a strategic partnership with the Tema Oil Refinery (ToR) to bridge the gap between technical education and industrial demand. Announced ahead of National TVET Week 2026, scheduled for October 12 to 16, this collaboration focuses on aligning vocational training with the rigorous standards of the oil and gas sector. The initiative aims to ensure that graduates are not only certified but possess the practical competencies required to thrive in high-risk industrial environments, effectively creating a direct pipeline from the classroom to the refinery.

A central pillar of this agreement is the implementation of structured Work Experience Learning (WEL) placements. This program will grant TVET learners direct access to ToR’s plant operations, providing invaluable hands-on experience in refinery processes. Mr. Edmond Kombat, Managing Director of ToR, highlighted the necessity of this partnership as the refinery prepares for significant future expansion. He emphasized that the refinery’s sustainability and growth depend on a steady influx of highly skilled engineers and technicians who can meet international safety and operational benchmarks.

Beyond technical training, both organizations are committed to reshaping the public narrative surrounding vocational education in Ghana. Historically, TVET has often been viewed as a secondary choice for students; however, this partnership seeks to position it as a prestigious and viable career pathway. Mr. Abdul Fatah Mahama, Deputy Director-General of the Ghana TVET Service, noted that showcasing the success of TVET graduates within major industrial players like ToR is essential for changing perceptions and promoting occupational dignity among the nation's youth.

National TVET Week 2026 will serve as a primary platform to further these goals through policy dialogues, industry-led events, and public engagement activities. By linking classroom theory to real-world refinery operations, the Ghana TVET Service and ToR are setting a precedent for industry-academia collaboration.
