Ghana Police Intensify Nationwide Operations: High-Profile Fraudster Captured and Major Drug Ring Busted

The Ghana Police Service has recorded significant breakthroughs in a series of nationwide operations, ranging from the arrest of high-profile fugitives to a massive drug bust in the Ashanti Region and a clampdown on traffic violations. Central to these efforts was the capture of convicted fraudster Eric Afoakwa, known as "Chad," who had been on the run since 2019. Afoakwa, who was sentenced to eight years for money laundering and tax evasion, was apprehended while attempting to flee the country. He is now set to be handed over to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to serve his sentence and fulfill a restitution order of $132,660.

In the Ashanti Region, a joint initiative between the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Special Operations Team and the Regional Police Command led to the arrest of 24 suspects across various communities, including Kodie and Apagya. The intelligence-led operation targeted drug peddling and yielded significant contraband, including quantities of cannabis and Tramadol, along with drug processing materials and unregistered vehicles. Among those detained is 49-year-old Richmond Okyere, who was found in possession of a pump-action gun. Simultaneously, in Lashibi, the Sakumono District Police recovered GH₵140,000 and an AK-47 rifle following a violent robbery. In that incident, a mobile money vendor successfully defended himself by returning fire, resulting in the death of one suspect while another remains at large.

Parallel to these criminal investigations, the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) has intensified enforcement of road regulations in the Volta Region. A joint operation with the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) resulted in the impounding of 34 tricycle taxis and 28 vehicles for the unauthorized use of strobe lights and sirens. Regional MTTD Commander Superintendent Benedicta Akpene Ansah emphasized that these unauthorized modifications pose significant safety risks and create public nuisance. The operation also targeted unlicensed tricycle operators, with police warning that similar crackdowns would soon be extended to other regions to ensure strict compliance with Road Traffic Regulations.

To complement these enforcement actions, safety experts are calling for increased public cooperation to reduce road fatalities and enhance security. Desmond Tublu, Assistant Manager of Hovis Driving School, urged motorists to respect police stops, noting that routine checks are vital for detecting vehicle faults and preventing accidents. He cautioned against the dangers of ignoring police signals, citing cases where non-compliance led to severe consequences, including vehicle fires. As investigations continue into the Ashanti drug ring and the Lashibi robbery, authorities are urging the public to provide information that could lead to further arrests, reinforcing the collaborative effort needed to maintain national security and safety.
