Ghana Police Intensify Public Safety Operations Following Fatal Ajumako Crash and Recovery of GH¢300,000 in Highway Robbery

Public safety and law enforcement efforts in Ghana have been thrust into the spotlight following a series of significant events across the country, ranging from a tragic highway accident in the Central Region to a high-stakes robbery foil in Bono East. On Monday, July 20, a fatal road traffic collision at Ajumako Kokoben claimed three lives and left 11 others injured. The incident involved a Toyota Isuzu and a Toyota Voxy, with preliminary investigations suggesting that the crash was triggered by a high-speed overtaking maneuver in dusty conditions. Firefighters from the Ghana National Fire Service were required to rescue four trapped victims, while seven others were assisted by courageous passersby before being transported for medical treatment.

In a separate but equally pressing matter of public security, the Bono East Regional Police Command successfully intercepted a major highway robbery on the Portor-Gurumpe (Kintampo-Buipe) Highway. Six suspects, aged between 19 and 26, were apprehended in connection with the theft of GH¢300,000. Startling details from the investigation revealed that the robbery was an internal betrayal; the driver of the vehicle, identified as Yahaya Seidu, allegedly conspired with the gang to rob his own employer. Police intelligence led to the immediate arrest of one suspect, Abdul Sadat Ali, which subsequently paved the way for the capture of five others who had attempted to flee into nearby bushes. The stolen cash was fully recovered during the operation.

Simultaneously, the Ghana Police Service is making significant strides in its nationwide crackdown on illegal vehicle modifications. Since the enforcement exercise began on June 15, 2026, authorities have intercepted a total of 4,627 vehicles across the country for the unauthorized use of sirens, strobe lights, and beacon lights. In the Greater Accra Region alone, 1,054 vehicles were flagged and processed. This operation is part of a broader strategy to enhance road traffic compliance and ensure that emergency signals are not abused by motorists, which often leads to confusion and dangerous conditions on the road.
