Government Distributes 8,500 Laptops to Kickstart One Million Coders Programme

The Government of Ghana has officially launched the first phase of the One Million Coders Programme (OMCP) with the distribution of approximately 8,500 laptops to various learning centers across the country. This initiative is designed to equip young Ghanaians with essential digital skills, including coding and Artificial Intelligence (AI), to improve their employability within the rapidly evolving global digital economy. Spearheaded by the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, the rollout marks a significant milestone in the nation's digital transformation agenda, aiming to position Ghana as a competitive hub for tech talent.

The distribution strategy involves equipping 130 designated learning centers and selected universities nationwide, with each center receiving an initial allocation of 50 laptops. This infrastructure is supported by a mix of public and private sector resources, including contributions from partners like MTN Ghana and the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC). During the launch, Minister Samuel Nartey George emphasized that the programme's success would be judged by its measurable impact on training outcomes and job placement rather than just the number of participants. This focus follows a highly successful pilot phase that attracted over 94,000 applications, demonstrating a high demand for digital literacy among the youth.

Beyond basic training, the OMCP is integrated with a broader strategy to ensure economic empowerment for its graduates. The government has established agreements to facilitate remote job placements for those who complete the programme, allowing them to participate in the international labor market from within Ghana. Furthermore, the initiative prioritizes inclusivity; through collaboration with the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, specific measures are being implemented to ensure that persons with disabilities are included in the training sessions. This comprehensive approach ensures that the digital divide is narrowed while fostering an environment where technology serves as a primary driver for job creation and national development.
