In recent weeks, law enforcement in Ghana has made significant strides in tackling narcotics-related crimes. On January 23, Godsway Dogbey was remanded into police custody by the Ho Magistrate Court after being arrested with 2,028 parcels of suspected Indian hemp valued at GH¢1,022,500 along the Ho–Sogakope route. Dogbey denied ownership of the drugs, claiming another individual was responsible. He is scheduled to reappear in court on February 5 to assist with ongoing investigations.
In a separate incident, Atampugri Akanyani was apprehended by the Ashanti South Regional Police Command on January 26 during a routine check at the Asanso checkpoint. Police discovered 713 slabs of suspected narcotics concealed in his Mercedes-Benz Sprinter bus. Akanyani allegedly attempted to bribe the officers with GH¢150,000 at the time of his arrest and is currently in custody as investigations continue.
Additionally, the Kwadaso Circuit Court recently sentenced Emmanuel Mensah, a 27-year-old driver’s mate, to 36 months in prison for stealing items valued at GH¢34,000 from an event planner's home. Mensah pleaded guilty to breaking in and selling the stolen electronics and foreign currency to an accomplice, who remains at large. This case underscores the ongoing challenges of theft and drug-related crimes in the region, prompting calls for increased vigilance and enforcement from authorities.
