Significant strides in community development and infrastructure are being recorded across Ghana, from the coastal regions of Accra to the agricultural heartlands of the North East Gonja District. In Dansoman, a critical sea defence project aimed at protecting coastal communities from devastating tidal waves is now 95% complete. Simultaneously, in the Salaga North constituency, a major empowerment initiative has provided over 120 women farmers and hundreds of poultry keepers with essential financial and material resources to bolster food security and economic independence.
In the Ablekuma West Municipality, the Gbegbeyise-Shiabu sea defence project has reached its final stages, bringing much-needed relief to residents who have long suffered from coastal erosion. Municipal Chief Executive George Kpakpo Allotey confirmed during a recent site visit that the structures have already begun effectively reducing tidal impacts on local properties and roads. The project is not only reclaiming lost land but is also slated to include new facilities intended to stimulate economic activities along the Dansoman beachfront. Local residents have expressed optimism about the progress but urged for the swift completion of the remaining five percent while pledging to protect the new shoreline from illegal activities.
Moving to the North East Gonja District, Member of Parliament Alhaji Alhassan Mumuni has distributed over GH"24,000 in cash and farm inputs to women under the "Salaga North Women Empowerment" programme. Each of the 120 beneficiaries received GH"200, two bags of NPK fertiliser, and various agrochemicals to support the cultivation of one acre of land each. This support is specifically designed to mitigate rising farming costs and promote economic self-sufficiency among rural women. This effort was further complemented by an EU-funded poultry programme that provided training and 50 birds each to over 500 farmers in the region, strengthening the local food supply chain.
These diverse initiatives highlight a dual focus on environmental protection and economic empowerment as vital components of national stability. While the Dansoman sea defence secures the physical safety and property of coastal residents, the agricultural support in Salaga North ensures the long-term viability of rural livelihoods. As the sea defence project nears its final handover and the farming season progresses, these interventions are expected to yield significant improvements in the living standards and resilience of the affected Ghanaian communities.
