Ghana’s quest for boxing glory at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games has faced a significant setback following the elimination of two key medal prospects. Precious Akai Nettey and Desmond Pappoe, both of whom had advanced to the quarter-final stages of their respective weight classes, saw their campaigns end under contrasting but equally disappointing circumstances. Their exits leave the Ghanaian boxing contingent with a narrowed path to the podium as the competition intensifies at the SEC Hall 5.
Precious Akai Nettey was eliminated from the men’s Light Middleweight (70kg) category after a tough encounter with Marvin Clair of Mauritius. All five judges scored the three-round contest 30-27 in favor of Clair, resulting in a unanimous decision defeat for the Ghanaian. The victory for Clair ensures him at least a bronze medal, while Nettey, who was one of five Ghanaian quarter-finalists, must now depart the tournament without a podium finish despite a spirited effort.
In the 80kg division, Desmond Pappoe was forced to withdraw from his highly anticipated quarter-final match against Ghanaian-born Canadian boxer Joshua Ofori. The withdrawal followed medical assessments of a fractured right shoulder Pappoe sustained during his previous victory over New Zealand’s Josh Tonga. Although Pappoe showed immense resilience by finishing that earlier fight in pain, the injury proved too severe for him to continue training or compete safely. As a result, Ofori has advanced to the semi-finals automatically, while Pappoe focuses on recovery.
Beyond the Ghanaian camp, the tournament has been electrified by the presence of Aziz Abdul, the grandson of former Ugandan leader Idi Amin. Competing in the super-heavyweight category, Abdul is determined to win Uganda’s first Commonwealth boxing medal since 1990. Abdul has been vocal about his desire to build a positive legacy through sport, distancing himself from the historical stigma of his grandfather’s regime. Referencing his signature "Ringo punch," Abdul aims to make history in Scotland and bring pride to his country by securing a gold medal.
As the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games continue, the focus for the Ghanaian team now shifts to its remaining athletes. While the loss of Nettey and the injury to Pappoe are significant blows to the nation's medal aspirations in the ring, the bravery shown by Pappoe in finishing his previous bout and the technical skill displayed by Nettey highlight the competitive spirit of the team. The coming days will determine if other members of the squad can step up to fill the void and secure the medals Ghana craves.
