Asante Kotoko head coach Eric Tinkler has issued a stark assessment of Ghana’s sports infrastructure, warning that the poor state of playing surfaces is a significant hurdle to player development. Speaking as the Porcupine Warriors prepare for the upcoming 2026/27 season, the South African tactician compared Ghana's facilities unfavorably to those in other African nations such as Tanzania and Algeria. Tinkler, who was appointed at the end of the previous season to spearhead a rebuilding phase at the club, emphasized that high-quality pitches are non-negotiable for improving the technical standards and performance of local players.

The coach's remarks followed a training friendly against Heart of Lions at the University of Ghana Stadium on August 18. Tinkler highlighted that while internal issues such as club discipline are being addressed, the external environment—specifically the quality of training and match surfaces—remains a bottleneck for progress. "You can't improve players on pitches like this," he asserted during a media interaction, noting that the physical environment is often just as influential on player growth as their individual behavior and coaching instructions.

Despite the infrastructure concerns, Tinkler remains motivated by the challenge of restoring Asante Kotoko to its former glory after a disappointing recent campaign. Bringing 14 years of coaching experience to Kumasi, including a history of successfully navigating relegation battles and building competitive squads for major competitions, the South African coach is currently overseeing a pre-season camp in Accra. He is tasked with instilling a new culture of discipline and tactical awareness as the team prepares for its first major tests under his leadership.
