The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has terminated the employment of two car park attendants at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) in Accra following allegations of extortion and soliciting money from travelers. This decisive action was triggered by multiple complaints from passengers who reported being harassed for payments by staff members. According to the GACL management, the dismissals are a critical component of an ongoing initiative to enhance accountability, enforce discipline, and ensure a professional environment at Ghana's premier international gateway.
Managing Director of GACL, Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, confirmed the disciplinary measures during an official visit by Parliament’s Committee on Roads and Transportation. She disclosed that the company acted promptly once the individuals involved were identified through internal investigations and passenger feedback. Mrs. Opare emphasized that the management has a zero-tolerance policy toward misconduct, stating that any form of solicitation or harassment by staff will be met with severe sanctions to protect the airport's reputation and integrity.
In addition to the dismissals, the GACL is intensifying its broader crackdown on begging and other forms of unprofessional conduct across all airport terminals. The Managing Director urged the traveling public to remain vigilant and proactively report any incidents of extortion or poor service to the authorities. By encouraging public reporting, the GACL aims to rebuild passenger confidence and maintain the high service standards expected of an international travel hub.
Beyond disciplinary reforms, the company is also focusing on physical infrastructure and service upgrades to improve the overall passenger experience. Current projects include the expansion of the airport car park and significant upgrades to Terminal 2. These developments, combined with the recent enforcement of staff discipline, reflect GACL’s commitment to providing a safe, efficient, and welcoming environment for all domestic and international travelers.
