The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has launched an extensive nationwide meter audit across its operational areas. This initiative is part of a strategic effort to significantly reduce commercial losses, enhance revenue assurance, and crack down on rampant electricity theft. The audit will involve the comprehensive inspection and verification of all metering systems, including prepaid meters, postpaid meters, and Special Load Tariff (SLT) installations, to ensure the integrity of measurement and billing infrastructure.
Unlike routine maintenance, ECG has stated that field personnel will not provide individual prior notices before visiting residential or commercial properties. The utility provider emphasized that the public announcement of the audit serves as official notification. To protect customers from potential imposters, ECG has advised the public to verify the identity of any visiting field staff. Customers can do this by using a designated USSD code on their mobile phones or by contacting the company's Customer Call Centre directly. All authorized personnel are also required to carry official identification during the exercise.
The audit is designed to identify and rectify various forms of revenue leakage, such as meter bypassing, illegal connections, and faulty equipment that leads to inaccurate billing. Supported by Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) regulations, the exercise underscores ECG’s commitment to stabilizing its financial health. By securing its revenue streams and ensuring all consumed power is accurately recorded and paid for, the company aims to improve service delivery and operational efficiency across the national grid.
