Residents in Ghana’s major metropolitan areas are set to experience significant utility disruptions in the coming days as the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and Ghana Water Limited (GWL) carry out critical maintenance and repair works. These scheduled interruptions, affecting power in parts of the Greater Accra Region and water supply across the Kumasi Metropolitan Area, are part of broader efforts to stabilize and improve the nation’s utility infrastructure. While the outages are temporary, both providers have emphasized the necessity of these operations to prevent potential system failures and ensure long-term service reliability.
In the Greater Accra and Tema regions, the ECG has scheduled maintenance for Sunday, June 7, 2026. Customers in the Tema Region will face power outages between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM, with affected areas including the Wild Life Gate and the Army Recruits Training School, among others. Meanwhile, residents in the Accra East Region should prepare for a longer disruption from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, impacting areas including Doblo and Nsuma. ECG has assured the public that power will be restored promptly upon the completion of the technical works and encourages customers to monitor official channels for real-time updates during the maintenance window.
Simultaneously, residents of Kumasi and its environs are preparing for a total water shutdown as Ghana Water Limited prepares to close the Barekese Water Treatment Plant for 48 hours. From June 9 to June 11, 2026, the plant will be offline to facilitate emergency repairs on the primary transmission pipeline, which has reportedly developed structural weaknesses. This shutdown will cut off millions of gallons of potable water to the Kumasi Metropolitan Area and adjacent municipalities. GWL officials have stressed that these repairs are critical to forestalling a catastrophic failure of the water distribution network that could have far more permanent consequences if left unaddressed.
Both utility providers have issued urgent advisories to the public to mitigate the impact of these service interruptions. Residents in Kumasi are strongly advised to store sufficient water ahead of the June 9 deadline, while electricity consumers in Accra and Tema are urged to plan their activities around the Sunday maintenance schedule. GWL and ECG have expressed regret for the inconvenience caused and have committed to providing updates via radio and digital platforms throughout the maintenance periods, underscoring their commitment to maintaining the country's essential service infrastructure.
