DVLA to Replace Faded 2026 Number Plates Free of Charge Amid Advancements in Regional Vehicle Tracking

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has announced that vehicle owners with fading 2026 number plates will be eligible for free replacements. Speaking on Asempa FM, the CEO of the DVLA, Julius Neequaye Kotey, acknowledged the widespread complaints regarding the durability of the current plates. He assured motorists that the Authority is taking full responsibility for the production defect and encouraged affected individuals to visit any DVLA office nationwide to secure their new plates at no cost.

According to Mr. Kotey, the quality issues stemmed from significant production challenges. Following a dispute over previous contracts, nearly all companies responsible for embossing number plates boycotted production. This left only one company to handle the national demand, which compromised the quality of the final product. To prevent a recurrence of this issue, the DVLA is transitioning to a new generation of number plates. These upcoming plates will utilize an electronic system instead of traditional paint, ensuring they remain legible and resistant to fading over time.

While Ghana focuses on improving vehicle identification, neighboring regions are seeing significant results from the integration of digital tracking technologies. In June, the Uganda Police Force reported an 88% success rate in recovering stolen vehicles, successfully locating 46 out of 52 reported missing cars. This achievement has been attributed to the effectiveness of the Intelligent Transport Monitoring System (ITMS), a digital tracking infrastructure designed to verify ownership and tackle vehicle theft in real-time.

The move toward electronic number plates in Ghana and the successful deployment of the ITMS in Uganda reflect a growing trend in African transport administration to leverage technology for security and efficiency. As the DVLA works to resolve the immediate crisis of defective plates, the long-term shift toward digitized identification is expected to strengthen law enforcement’s ability to monitor road users and curb criminal activities. For Ghanaian motorists, the upcoming electronic plates represent not just a solution to fading paint, but a step toward a more robust and secure national vehicle database.
