The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) has officially called upon journalists and media practitioners to intensify public education efforts regarding cybersecurity as a vital defense against the rising tides of cybercrime, online fraud, and digital extremism. Speaking at the launch of the National Community Media Cyber Capacity Building Project in Accra, Director-General Divine Selase Agbeti underscored the media's indispensable role in safeguarding citizens within the digital landscape. He argued that the power of informed, accurate reporting is a primary tool for preventing cyber incidents and reinforcing national security, particularly as Ghana continues its rapid digital integration.
This new capacity-building initiative is a strategic collaboration between the CSA, the Africa Centre for Digital Transformation (ACDT), and the Czech Republic. It is designed specifically to equip journalists with the specialized skills and technical knowledge required to report on complex cybersecurity issues effectively. Director-General Agbeti emphasized that when media houses prioritize cybersecurity education, they act as a first line of defense, helping the public identify digital threats and reducing the success rate of malicious actors who exploit information gaps.
Supporting the initiative, Deputy Minister Mohammed Adams Sukparu highlighted that robust cybersecurity is the bedrock of Ghana's ongoing digital transformation. He noted that the government’s efforts to digitize public services can only be sustainable if the citizenry is resilient against cyber threats. A key component of this project is the establishment of a specialized Cyber Security Press Corps. This dedicated group of reporters will facilitate closer collaboration between the media, the CSA, and law enforcement agencies, ensuring that warnings and educational materials reach every corner of the country.
Looking forward, the CSA aims for this partnership to create a more informed and vigilant public, ultimately deterring cybercriminals from targeting Ghanaian individuals and businesses. By bridging the gap between technical expertise and public awareness, the National Community Media Cyber Capacity Building Project seeks to foster a culture of digital safety. As technology continues to evolve, the Authority maintains that a proactive media remains a cornerstone of the nation’s strategy to protect its digital sovereignty and economic stability.
