Tragic Bukom Junction Crash: One Fatality and 22 Injured as Court Remands Driver

A devastating road accident at Bukom Junction in Accra has claimed the life of one person and left 22 others injured after a vehicle suffered mechanical failure on July 27. The incident occurred when a vehicle's brakes reportedly failed, causing the driver to lose control and plough into a crowd of pedestrians. Emergency services, including the Ghana Police Service and the National Ambulance Service, responded promptly to the scene to transport the injured to medical facilities and manage the resulting chaos in the busy commercial area.

The sole fatality has been identified as 22-year-old Esther Arthur, a young woman remembered by her family as respectful and intelligent with aspirations of joining the Ghana Armed Forces. Her family revealed that she was returning from work and had briefly stopped at a mobile money vendor when the tragedy occurred. Among the 22 others currently receiving treatment at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and Ussher Polyclinic are a pregnant woman and a child. While initial reports suggested as many as 40 people had been hurt, official tallies were later clarified by local authorities.

Alfred Ashie Kotey, the Member of Parliament for Odododiodio, visited the survivors in the hospital and confirmed that their medical bills are being covered. The MP has called for a comprehensive investigation into the cause of the brake failure while urging residents to maintain clear roads to facilitate emergency access. He noted the difficulty responders face in congested areas, emphasizing that road safety is a collective responsibility to prevent such high-casualty events in the future.

Following the incident, the driver involved was arraigned and has been remanded into police custody for two weeks. The tragedy has reignited a local debate regarding roadside trading and the heavy pedestrian congestion at Bukom Junction. Family members of the deceased and community leaders are now advocating for stricter enforcement of urban planning laws to reduce the risks posed to pedestrians in the heart of Accra, ensuring that Esther Arthur’s death leads to meaningful safety improvements.
