The Bono Region has become the launchpad for a significant new initiative in grassroots sports with the introduction of the WABs Athlete Development Camp. Held in Sunyani between August 7 and 9, 2026, the program aims to reshape how young Ghanaian athletes approach their training and professional aspirations. Founded by Bolfrey William Abbam, the camp brought together a diverse group of participants, including youth from the XCEL Basketball Academy, university student-athletes, and local coaches, all focused on the concept that athletic excellence requires more than just on-field play.
Central to the camp’s curriculum was a focus on holistic physical development. Participants were introduced to practical exercises designed to enhance strength, balance, coordination, and endurance—many of which can be performed at home with minimal or no equipment. To ensure the training continues beyond the three-day event, organizers provided each athlete with a personalized home workout plan and a performance wristband. By emphasizing these off-field fundamentals like squats and sprints, WABs seeks to equip the next generation with the physical literacy needed to compete at higher levels.
The event also featured a significant mentorship component, headlined by Jeffrey Isha, an international professional American football player currently competing in Germany. Isha shared his journey into the international sporting arena, providing the young athletes with a roadmap for pursuing opportunities abroad. His insights underscored the necessity of discipline, responsibility, and a structured approach to development. This perspective offered participants a rare look at the professional commitment required to transition from local grassroots talent to a professional international athlete.
Looking ahead, founder Bolfrey William Abbam expressed a commitment to expanding the WABs initiative across Ghana. Plans are already in motion to establish regional camps and extend specialized training modules to other parts of the country. The ultimate goal of the program is to create a sustainable, structured pathway for Ghanaian youth, fostering not only elite athletes but well-rounded individuals capable of excelling in both sports and life through the values of self-care and professional rigor.
