Dr. Bawumia Urges Unity as NPP Concludes Nationwide Constituency Elections with Landmark Wins for Women

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has successfully conducted its constituency executive elections across Ghana, marking a significant milestone in the party's reorganization strategy ahead of the 2028 general elections. Following the completion of polls in various regions, the NPP’s 2028 presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has issued a rallying cry for unity, urging both victors and unsuccessful aspirants to set aside their differences. Dr. Bawumia emphasized that a cohesive front is the party’s "surest path to victory," congratulating the new executives for their commitment and highlighting their critical role in strengthening the party’s grassroots structures to face future political challenges.

The elections were characterized by several high-profile contests and historic firsts. In Atwima Nwabiagya South, Dr. Eugene Boakye Danquah Ofori-Appiah secured the chairmanship on his fourth attempt, defeating the incumbent Mr. Stephen Boateng with 742 votes. The polls also saw a breakthrough in female representation within the party’s youth wings; Safia Kasim emerged as the first female Youth Organiser in Nkwanta South, while Veronica Asantewaa Yeboah made history as the first woman to hold the same position in the Awutu Senya East constituency. Other key areas such as Suame, Hohoe, and Akan successfully elected full executive teams, with many MPs, including Kojo Oppong Nkrumah and John Darko, commending the overall peaceful and mature conduct of the delegates.

Despite the general success, the election process faced internal friction and legal hurdles in specific areas. The Deputy General Secretary of the NPP, Haruna Mohammed, clarified that the party's internal decisions regarding election disputes are the product of constitutional organs and should not be attributed to Dr. Bawumia. He noted that polls in constituencies like Assin South and Pungpungpu remain suspended due to court injunctions, reflecting the party's commitment to lawful procedures. Simultaneously, the Grassroots Alliance for Victory 2028 petitioned the Council of Elders calling for General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong’s resignation over concerns regarding delegate welfare, specifically a directive that allegedly denied basic provisions like food and water during the voting period.

As the newly elected executives take office, the focus has shifted toward reconciliation and long-term mobilization. Prominent party figures, including former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko and various Members of Parliament, have called for immediate outreach to unsuccessful candidates to ensure their skills remain within the party fold. This period of internal restructuring also coincides with national ambitions, as Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has declared his intention to run for the National Chairmanship. The successful conclusion of these constituency polls sets the stage for regional and national elections, as the NPP seeks to build a disciplined and unified machinery to maintain political power in 2028.
