Dr. Fred Adomako-Boateng, the Ashanti Regional Director of Health Services, has raised alarms over the rising maternal and infant mortality rates in the Ashanti Region, which are undermining efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Ghana. The region reported a troubling rate of 232 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births, marking the highest figure in three years. Key factors contributing to this alarming trend include delays in accessing healthcare, insufficient emergency care facilities, and various socio-economic challenges.
In response to these issues, initiatives such as medical drone deliveries have been implemented to enhance emergency response times, indicating a potential for reducing maternal fatalities. However, the Regional Health Directorate emphasizes the need for improved referral systems, increased healthcare staffing, and comprehensive community education to address these pressing challenges effectively. Without significant intervention, the region's health outcomes will continue to hinder national progress towards the SDGs.
