Asanko Gold and Brighter Future Africa Launch Strategic Literacy Initiatives to Combat Learning Loss in Ghana

Ghana's educational landscape is seeing a significant boost through collaborative efforts aimed at improving literacy and sustaining reading habits among school children. Two major initiatives—the Literacy Improvement Project in the Amansie districts and the nationwide 2026 Holiday Reading Challenge—have been launched to address literacy gaps and prevent learning loss during school vacations. These programs, supported by corporate entities, traditional foundations, and state agencies, signal a concerted effort to foster a lifelong love for reading and improve teacher capacity across the country.

In the Ashanti Region, Asanko Gold Ghana Limited, in partnership with the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Foundation and the Ghana Education Service (GES), has introduced the Literacy Improvement Project. Targeting the Amansie West and Amansie South Districts, the initiative focuses on providing GES-approved reading materials and strengthening the pedagogical skills of teachers. Justice Fenteng, General Manager of Asanko Gold, emphasized that sustained access to quality literature is essential for student development. A standout feature of this project is the deployment of mobile and virtual libraries, ensuring that even remote schools can access a diverse range of educational resources to cultivate a lifelong learning culture.

Complementing these regional efforts, Brighter Future Africa (BFA) has teamed up with the Ghana Library Authority (GhLA) to launch the 2026 Holiday Reading Challenge. Scheduled to run from July 24 to September 7, 2026, the nationwide program aims to keep learners engaged during the long vacation to mitigate the common phenomenon of learning loss. During a community event at the Asofan Community Library, BFA Executive Director Daniel Korley Botchway highlighted that holidays provide a unique opportunity for children to enhance their reading skills and explore their creativity. Edward Addo-Yobo, the Greater Accra Regional Librarian, further assured parents that public libraries are fully equipped and ready to support children throughout the challenge.

These initiatives reflect a holistic approach to education that transcends the traditional classroom setting by integrating teacher training, digital library infrastructure, and community-based reading challenges. Local education authorities and traditional leaders have expressed strong support, urging parents and community members to actively participate in these advancements. As these projects take root under the current administration, they are expected to significantly raise literacy standards and provide Ghanaian students with the foundational tools necessary for academic success and personal growth.
