The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), in a strategic partnership with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), has provided essential relief items and financial aid to 297 military personnel and civilian employees. These individuals were among those hardest hit by the severe flooding on June 29, which caused extensive property damage and displacement across Accra and other regions. At a presentation ceremony held at Burma Camp in Accra, the GAF leadership emphasized that this support is a critical component of its commitment to the welfare of its personnel, especially in the wake of natural disasters that impact their stability and livelihoods.
Chief of the Defence Staff, Lieutenant General William Agyapong, presided over the event and conveyed the sympathies of President John Dramani Mahama to the affected individuals. The relief package distributed included essential household items, uniforms to replace those destroyed, and direct financial assistance intended to alleviate immediate hardships. Lt. Gen. Agyapong noted that while the provision could not entirely replace the significant losses sustained, it serves as a vital gesture of solidarity and support from the military high command. He reiterated that the well-being of GAF members remains a top priority, ensuring they are equipped to recover from the trauma and destruction caused by the rains.
In addition to material support, the GAF has made counseling services available to the beneficiaries and their families to assist with the psychological recovery from the disaster. The June 29 floods were particularly devastating, leading to fatalities and necessitating emergency rescue operations led by the GAF in various parts of the country. Addressing the root causes of such events, Lt. Gen. Agyapong underscored the importance of maintaining proper environmental sanitation practices to prevent future flooding. This comprehensive relief effort highlights the dual role of the GAF in both providing national security and ensuring the internal resilience of its own workforce during environmental crises.
