In the Ashanti Region of Ghana, 30-year-old Abdul-Aziz is reshaping perceptions of disability through his remarkable journey of resilience and empowerment. Born with hearing and speech impairments and having lost his father at the tender age of six, Abdul-Aziz faced significant challenges throughout his life. Despite financial hardships that limited his educational opportunities, he pursued a practical skill in welding, which became a turning point in his life.
After completing an apprenticeship, Abdul-Aziz struggled to establish his own workshop until he joined a specialized training program funded by the World Food Programme and the Mastercard Foundation. This program focused on the fabrication of post-harvest agricultural equipment, allowing him to hone his skills further. Today, he successfully produces maize and soybean threshers, earning GHS 4,000 for every four machines he fabricates.
Abdul-Aziz's ambition extends beyond personal success; he aims to open his own workshop to create job opportunities for other young individuals, particularly those with disabilities. His story serves as a powerful reminder that with determination and the right support, disability does not define one's potential or future. Abdul-Aziz exemplifies how resilience can transform challenges into opportunities, inspiring others in his community to pursue their dreams despite adversity.
